Much like South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, Collingwood has many seniors programs that run throughout the year. For participants attending the Adult Day Program at Beulah Gardens, Collingwood may be closer to your home.

Seniors Drop-in Badminton
Seniors Badminton offers many health benefits – it provides excellent cardiovascular exercise, improves flexibility, and aids hand and eye coordination (group leader Ken said that his high blood pressure has improved since he started playing). The group is friendly and members sometimes organize social events, such as karaoke dinners. Although most participants are intermediate level players, players of all levels are welcome. Participants bring their own racket, but shuttlecocks are provided by CNH. Participants play doubles games only.
Time: 2:30 – 4:15 pm
Location: CNH
Cost: $3.50/session
Ongoing: Wednesdays
Seniors Gentle Chair Yoga
Gentle Chair Yoga focuses on safe, slow-moving exercises suitable for people who are dealing with physical challenges. The class helps participants to relax, reduce anxiety, build muscle, and increase strength and flexibility. Instructor Marie Chang leads participants through exercises such as spinal flexes, arm circles, and leg stretches. The class is relaxed, with no pressure. Marie varies the practice and adapts the moves for people with different ability levels, so there’s usually something for everyone. As Marie says, “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.” Participant Diane Dufour said, “The best thing about Gentle Chair Yoga is that it grounds you. It makes you feel very relaxed. You feel like you can take on more. I used to have a lot of back and neck pain. Now the pain is gone. I’m sure yoga’s helped.”
Time: 1:45 –2:45 pm
Location: CNH
Cost: $3/session
Ongoing, Mondays and Wednesdays

Health Benefits of Yoga and Meditation for Seniors

A new study from the University of California has concluded that there may be more health benefits to practicing yoga for seniors than simply improving their physical strength and balance. The study concluded that completing a three month program of yoga may reduce seniors risk of developing cognitive impairments.

The study participants took part in 1 hour Kundalini yoga class once a week as well as practicing Kirtan Kriya meditation for 20 minutes a day. The control group did memory enhancement training activities for 1 hour a week.

At the end of the study the yoga group showed more improvement in their visual-spacial memory and had statistically significant positive changes in brain connectivity. Both groups showed improvement in their verbal memory skills. The yoga group also experienced an added bonus of having lower levels of anxiety and depression after the 12 week study.

If you would like to learn more about the study you can get more information at Medical News Today.
