Diet & Nutrition in Parkinson's Disease - Community Talk

Burnaby Community Talk Registration Info

Food for Thought: Diet & Nutrition in PD

Increasing amounts of research suggest blood sugar issues, depleted B-vitamins and accessory nutrient deficiency (coenzyme Q10, lithium, glutathione, etc.) in people with Parkinson's disease, when compared with healthy controls. This may lead to a person with Parkinson's asking questions such as, "Does it matter what I eat? How do I know if I'm getting enough? Should I take supplements?" If you or someone you know with Parkinson's disease has been asking these questions, you may benefit from our upcoming community talk with Dr. Laurie Mischley.
Dr. Mischley studied naturopathic medicine (ND) at Bastyr University and epidemiology (MPH) and nutritional sciences (PhD) at the University of Washington. Her work is focused on identifying the nutritional requirements unique to individuals with neurodegenerative diseases. She has published on coenzyme Q10, lithium and glutathione deficiency in Parkinson's disease (PD). Dr. Mischley maintains a small clinical practice at Seattle Integrative Medicine focused on nutrition and neurological health.

Alzheimer Society Fall Newsletters are Out!

The Alzheimer Society's fall In Touch and Insight bulletins are now available online.

In this seasons edition of In Touch we learn about Communication Strategies for Caregivers:

"Set the stage: Communicating is easier if other things are not happening at the same time. When trying to get your message across, make sure that there are few distractions. For example, if the TV or radio is on, consider turning it off. It can also be helpful to ensure that the person can hear and see you properly. This may involve making eye contact, turning on the lights and making sure the person is wearing their glasses and/or hearing aid if the person uses them..." Read More

In this edition of Insight we hear an inspiring story from Mary Gretsinger:

"Two years ago, Mary Gretsinger, a retired teacher, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 66. Recently, Mary shared how her love for playing the violin, walking and her family have helped her embrace a new attitude toward life..." Read More

We also learn about a new resource available to the community. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. has released Speaking Up About Dementia: A Simple Guide to Raising Your Voice to support people who are interested in making a difference in their communities. This resource includes information on:

• What advocacy is.
• How to speak to others about dementia issues.
• How to engage politicians through letter writing or in-person meetings.
• How social and print media can make a difference.

Experimental Alzheimer's drug shows promise against brain plaques

An experimental drug called aducanumab dramatically reduced the toxic plaques found in the brains of people living with Alzheimer's disease, according to results of a Phase1b clinical trial designed to test safety and tolerability rather than effectiveness. The results, previously reported at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® 2015 (AAIC®), hinted that the drug may also be able to slow the loss of memory and thinking. Experts caution that additional, larger studies will be necessary to determine if aducanumab has an effect on slowing down Alzheimer’s. Read More

Repetitive behavior may be stressful for Alzheimer’s caregivers
A person with Alzheimer's may do or say something over and over — like repeating a word, question or activity — or undo something that has just been finished. Repetition can be stressful for the caregiver, but remember that it’s the disease causing the behavior, not the person. Read More
