Caring for Older Adults through Self-Care

Are you a Family Caregiver (unpaid family member or friend) taking care of an older adult?

Do you often feel overwhelmed, stressed, frustrated and alone?

The BC Centre for Elder Advocacy and Support (BCCEAS) and Family Caregivers of BC invite you to attend a free workshop, teleseminar or webinar, titled “Caring for Older Adults through Self-Care”.

Learn how to protect older adults by:

·         Staying healthy while caregiving
·         Avoiding isolation
·         Improving communication
·         Reducing stress

3 in-person workshops will be offered:

Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse

The Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse is a network that intends to educate and increase awareness about elder abuse issues facing Canadian individuals and organizations.
Although this network has been in existence for a while, they have just launched their new website with an easy to navigate design. You can easily access resources for creating policy and practice that aim to prevent elder abuse and find clear definitions and examples of various types of elder abuse.
This website has resources for older adults as well as for those in formal or informal caregiving roles.

Centers Closed for Labour Day

ClOSURE REMINDER

South Vancouver Adult Day Program and Beulah Gardens Adult Day Program will be closed Monday September 7th for the observance of Labour Day. Both centers will be open Tuesday September 8th for regular hours.

There are lots of family friendly events taking place in Vancouver this weekend, please check Things To Do In Vancouver for a list of Labour Day activities.

Alzheimer Society of BC – Upcoming education

Getting to Know Dementia
This introductory session is for people who are experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who are supporting a person with a recent diagnosis. We will review basic information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and the impact of receiving a diagnosis. Participants will also learn about different types of support available including services offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Family Caregiver Series 
For family members or friends who are currently supporting a person with dementia.  The sessions will cover: Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, effective and creative strategies for communication, problem solving responsive behaviours, personal planning, navigating the health care system and self-care for the caregiver.
