Everyday is Senior's Day at South Van


Every week South Vancouver Neighbourhood House hosts dozens of programs geared towards seniors in the community. Annual membership is only $3 so this is a great service to take advantage of. Here is the weekly schedule:

Things To Do This Long Weekend: Easter!

South Vancouver and Beulah ADP will be closed Friday March 25th and Monday March 28th to observe Easter. There are lots of family events to do this weekend so don't forget to get out and have some fun in the community.

A-Mazing Egg Hunt at VanDusen Botanical Garden
What: Celebrate Easter with the annual Easter egg hunt at the beautiful VanDusen Botanical Garden.

Winter Farmers Market at Nat Bailey Stadium
What: Enjoy shopping local throughout the winter at the Winter Farmers Market at Nat Bailey Stadium. Includes food trucks, live music, and more.

Stanley Park Easter Train
What: Hop on the Stanley Park Train for an egg-citing Easter ride through Stanley Park.

On April 11, The Pharmacists Clinic will be offering a one hour webinar that will briefly discuss Parkinson's disease, medication and treatment options.
We welcome all individuals with Parkinson's to this webinar as well as their spouses and/or carepartners/caregivers as they may benefit from learning more about the disease to assist in supporting their loved one.

Upcoming Tele-workshops
The Alzheimer Society of B.C.'s free one-hour tele-workshops allow you to participate from home, wherever you are in the province. Workshops include a live web video of the presentation, making it easy for you to follow along on your computer while you listen on the phone. You will also have the option of downloading handouts after the session. Upcoming tele-workshops include:

Understanding Behaviour
Wednesday, April 6, 2016, 2 p.m. or 7 p.m. PDT
Please choose the time that is most convenient for you.
Caregivers will learn how to understand behaviour as a form of communication. We will explore strategies to determine what the person with dementia might be trying to communicate, to find ways to decrease the occurrence of behaviours that concern us and to respond in supportive ways.

Research Update
Thursday, April 21, 2016, 1 p.m. PDT
Join Dr. Haakon Nygaard as he explores the question, "Is there light at the end of the tunnel?". This session will review some of the exciting scientific progress being made in Alzheimer's disease research and its potential future clinical directions.

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. offers support groups for caregivers who want current information that will help improve the quality of life for people living with dementia. If you are unable to attend a support group in person, you can join other caregivers in a tele-support group meeting by phone. Read more.

The MoMA Alzheimer's Project

The Museum of Modern Art in New York City developed an art outreach program called “The MoMA Alzheimer’s Project: Making Art Accessible to People with Dementia”.

This project aims at giving guidance to those who want to engage individuals with Alzheimer’s disease with art. There are two sets of videos: a set of videos about how to plan and implement discussion programs about art with groups of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and another set of videos to plan and implement art making session with groups of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.

Walk & Talk Diabetes Program: Burnaby Neighbourhood House


Walk or Run

Get active and explore walking together!
Step into spring and join us for the Canadian Diabetes Association’s FREE eight-week Walk & Talk activity-based program focused on diabetes prevention and self-management.
Each session includes:
  • A short educational talk by a health-care professional or knowledgeable community member. Topics discussed include walking safely, healthy eating, active living, staying motivated, and setting personal goals.
  • A 45-minute, low-impact walk around the neighbourhood in a supportive and non-competitive environment.
  • Prizes and incentives for all participants!
FREE | 55+ (Older adults/seniors)
