Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse
The Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse is a network that intends to educate and increase awareness about elder abuse issues facing Canadian individuals and organizations.
Although this network has been in existence for a while, they have just launched their new website with an easy to navigate design. You can easily access resources for creating policy and practice that aim to prevent elder abuse and find clear definitions and examples of various types of elder abuse.
This website has resources for older adults as well as for those in formal or informal caregiving roles.

Centers Closed for Labour Day
ClOSURE REMINDER
South Vancouver Adult Day Program and Beulah Gardens Adult Day Program will be closed Monday September 7th for the observance of Labour Day. Both centers will be open Tuesday September 8th for regular hours.
There are lots of family friendly events taking place in Vancouver this weekend, please check Things To Do In Vancouver for a list of Labour Day activities.

Getting to Know Dementia
This introductory session is for people who are experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who are supporting a person with a recent diagnosis. We will review basic information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and the impact of receiving a diagnosis. Participants will also learn about different types of support available including services offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Family Caregiver Series
For family members or friends who are currently supporting a person with dementia. Depression Among Seniors
The Canadian Psychological Association publishes a series of fact sheets entitled “Psychology Works” which describe different psychological conditions affecting various populations.
Their brief online fact sheet “Depression Among Seniors” gives an overview of symptoms, risks and outcomes, an explanation for why depression is often overlooked in this population and possible psychological interventions that can be considered for elderly patients/residents experiencing depression.

Diabetes and Dementia
Guidance on Practical Management
A health care research team in the U.K. (TREND UK) has put together a guidance report which may prove helpful for caregivers of people effected by both diabetes and dementia in Canada.
"This guidance has been developed to highlight the importance of recognising the relationship between diabetes and
dementia, the impact one condition has on the other, and maximising the benefits and safety of diabetes treatments
while minimising risks. It is intended to serve as a helpful resource for carers and health care professionals working in
nursing and residential homes, carers and community nurses working with elderly people living in their own homes,
and for commissioners and designers of services."
