New Resource: brainXchange

A new online resource is available for care partners. The brainXchange is a network of people dedicated to improving quality of life and supports for persons with or at risk of having brain-health needs related to dementia, mental health and neurological conditions related to aging or have experienced brain health changes earlier in life that are now more complex with aging.

Caregiver guilt is often fueled by the demands of the role, the expectation of others and the expectations of our toughest critic - ourselves!

• Explore what triggers our guilt and share coping strategies with other caregivers

Getting to Know Dementia
This introductory session is for people who are experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who are supporting a person with a recent diagnosis. Participants will also learn about different types of support available including services offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Your Voice Matters – Advocacy 
When we need support, it helps if we have an understanding of how to speak up and ask for what we need in the most effective way. In this workshop, participants will learn how to become more successful advocates for themselves and the person they are caring for, with a particular focus on residential care advocacy.

Accessing Services
This session is for family caregivers who are currently supporting a person with dementia who is living at home. It will review strategies for accessing support from a variety of sources in your community – from getting help from family and friends, to navigating the formal health care system. The session will also consider some of the challenges that can arise when making the decision to access services and support, and offers strategies for working with service providers and acting as an advocate.

Upcoming Dementia Sessions from Alzheimer Society of BC

Getting to Know Dementia
This introductory session is for people who are experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who are supporting a person with a recent diagnosis. We will review basic information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and the impact of receiving a diagnosis. Participants will also learn about different types of support available including services offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Family Caregiver Series 
For family members or friends who are currently supporting a person with dementia.  The sessions will cover: Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, effective and creative strategies for communication, problem solving responsive behaviours, personal planning, navigating the health care system and self-care for the caregiver.
Three Wednesday evenings, June 3, 10 & 17, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Vancouver General Hospital, Jim Pattison Pavilion  

Dementia Dialogue – Even Batman had Robin:  Asking for & Accepting Help
As a caregiver for someone with dementia, are you uncomfortable asking for or accepting help?
• Asking for help is not a sign of weakness or inability to cope, it can benefit all involved
• Explore how to ask for help and what help is available both formally and informally
Lead by two facilitators who will guide the discussion and provide information and resources.
